Returning to varsity after two seasons, senior Guard Kody Weaver hopes to bring experience and strength to Carroll’s offensive line.  This season will be the third varsity season and the second season starting for Weaver, who specializes in pass blocking. However, Weaver is not taking his spot on varsity for granted, and has been working throughout the offseason to improve his game.

“I’m working on improving my overall strength, speed, and footwork, as well as working to hone the mental part of my game,” Weaver said. “I’m trying to focus more during my workouts and I’m doing some extra supplementary things like swimming and biking to make sure I’m at the top of my game.”

Weaver, who describes himself as a dedicated player, is hoping to not only get stronger and faster, but also to improve the mental aspect of his game as he goes into this season.  "I consider myself a hardworking, very focused player who is passionate about the game, but I need to work on not overthinking things,” Weaver said.

In order to prepare for this season, Weaver is not only working on his game, but also making sure that he maintains a balance in his life.  “We work out every day, sometimes twice, but I also prepare for the season by first making sure that all of my academic priorities are taken care of,” Weaver said.

Weaver hopes that his work over the offseason, both physically and mentally, will pay off once the season begins, both for him, and the team in general.  “I hope to be a contributing aspect of the team and to earn first team all-district honors,” Weaver said.  Though he hopes to earn personal recognition, Weaver considers the team’s success, and the enjoyment of the game, more important.  “I think it’s important to make sure that I have fun while also ensuring that we get the win,” Weaver said.

As a returning member on varsity, Weaver knows that it is important to be a leader on the team. However, Weaver, who still remembers the people who helped him when he first started playing for varsity, prefers to take a more detailed approach to being a leader.  “I am a very personal leader, because instead of encouraging the team as a whole, I try to help out individual teammates and underclassmen,” Weaver said. “I remember the guys that helped me out when I was an underclassman, and so I feel like I should do the same.”

However, it was not only other players who helped Weaver adapt. He also attributed his success to one of his former coaches who helped him through his first year on varsity.

“I look up to one of my previous coaches and teachers, coach Pinson, because he gave me a lot of valuable advice, and I wouldn’t have gotten through the varsity experience without him,” Weaver said.

Though last season ended sooner than Weaver had hoped, he is shifting his focus to this year, and how he can help lead the team further.

“Last season was disappointing because we didn’t get as far as we wanted to,” Weaver said. “But key players got experience at the varsity level, so we can be better this year.”
