Senior Brett Renger is a relentless player. Simply put, he doesn’t like to lose. He says it is this attitude that powers his play on the field, and his preparation off the field, making him the receiver he is.
“My playing style is explosive,” Renger said. “I play with an attitude that if you can catch me, I’m going to take you to the ground with me.”
This summer, Renger is working on developing his attitude on the field to become an even better player. Renger says that he has the physical skills he needs to succeed on the field, but is working on honing his mindset to become a smarter player.
“I’ve been working on staying focused on the mental part of the game,” he said. “I have all the tools I need, it’s just myself that’s holding me back.”
Renger says that he has already improved the mental aspect of his game significantly, and that the improvement is reflected in his play. He says that his increased focus has allowed him to process and analyze each play better.
“The speed of the game has slowed down a lot more for me,” he said. “I can read coverages a lot easier and understand what I’m doing a lot better. It will help me relax when I’m on the field.”
Though Renger is becoming more relaxed on the field, he says that between football and school, he has little time to relax in his free time.
“I like to hang out with my friends when I’m not playing, and just relax if I’m not too busy,” he said. “I don’t ever get enough sleep though.”
However, the time spent playing football is nothing new to Renger, who has been playing for six years, and joined varsity for the first time two years ago as a sophomore.
“My favorite moment I’ve had since I began playing is the first time I ever ran out of the tunnel my sophomore year,” he said.
Since that first run out of the tunnel, Renger has continued running without looking back, becoming an occasional playmaker last year, and stepping up as one of the leaders of the receiving corps this year. As a potential leader among receivers, it comes as no surprise that Renger looks up to past Dragon leaders.
“I look up to Kyle Padron and the way he can lead a group of guys,” he said. “He picks you up when you are down, and he’s just a good person, and a winner.”
Though Renger is not new to varsity, he hopes to step up as a top receiver this year, something he has not been in past seasons. He also hopes to lead the team to a championship, a goal that eluded the team last year and drove Renger to work even harder to achieve it this season.
“Last season was OK,” Renger said. “I wish I could have been the go-to guy, but everyone has to wait their turn. The way last year ended was not too pleasing for me, I don’t like losing and I hope for us to make it the whole way this year.”
