Now it’s official. Helmets are strapped on. Drills are being run. Coaches are blowing whistles and barking orders.
Football season has begun, much to the delight of the Carroll athletes and fans alike.
The Dragons’ two-a-days practices ushering in preseason began Monday at Carroll Senior High. Carroll coach Hal Wasson said that right from the start, practices kicked off with plenty of positives.
"That was probably the best first day practice I’ve ever been around," said Wasson, who begins his third season as Dragons coach. "I was looking for enthusiasm, intensity and conditioning, and all three of those were checked off. |
"They come back in great shape and their conditioning gets them ready for this," he said.
The Carroll athletes are in shorts and helmets, as the UIL prohibits players from donning full pads until the fifth day of preseason. Friday is when the Dragons will wear the rest of their gear and begin taking part in contact drills with other players.
On Saturday, Carroll is scheduled to participate in its first intersquad scrimmage.
During these first few days before the Dragons get into the heart of preseason training, Wasson wants his players to keep focused on the basics.
"Execution and consistency," Wasson said, describing the team’s emphasis starting off. "Those are the two big words. We want to do that in all phases – kicking, offense and defense. We want to be consistent in execution and conditioning as well."
Change in Venue?
With a little work left to do on some upgrades at Dragon Stadium, Saturday’s scrimmage might not be held there as was originally planned. The event could be moved to Carroll’s practice field at the high school, depending on whether the job is complete on time.
Wasson said the work of replacing the field’s turf, which will feature Carroll’s logo in the middle, looks good and will add to what has been a great venue for the Dragons.
"They’re putting the final touches on it. It looks awesome. It’s a beautiful-looking turf and something that we can be proud of."
Whether or not the event is held at the stadium or the practice fields, Carroll’s scrimmages (freshman, JV, varsity) are scheduled to take place 8, 9, and 10 a.m. Saturday.
