After Carroll built a 24-0 lead in the third, Hebron mounted a comeback, thanks in part to three Dragons interceptions in the second half. Carroll quarterback David Piland, who was 25-of-34 for 241 yards and a touchdown, was pulled after throwing his second pick of the half early in the fourth quarter. Hebron (4-5 overall, 1-3 in 6-5A) cashed in on the second one with a 44-yard field goal to make it 24-10 with 9:07 remaining in the contest.
Backup quarterback Kyle Williamson relieved Piland in the fourth, but threw a costly interception during his first drive. The Hawks returned it to the Carroll 30, scoring in three plays to make it 24-17 with 4:08 remaining.
Avers, who had 152 yards rushing and two touchdowns, helped ice the game with a 47-yard run that put Carroll at Hebron's 32 yard line and allowed the Dragons to eat up the clock. Williamson, who was 3-of-4 for 34 yards, also delivered a big 16-yard pass on third down to help Carroll avoid giving Hebron the ball back.
Carroll collected 491 yards of offense, while holding the Hawks to 343 yards (134 in the first half). After Avers' opening score -- a 23-yard-run -- Cade Foster kicked a 25-yard field goal to make it 10-0 late in the first.
Sean Landers, who had eight catches for 68 yards, scored on a six-yard fade into the endzone with 15 seconds left before the half for a 17-0 halftime lead. Avers scored his second touchdown midway through the third for the 24-0 lead.
The Dragons, who clinched a playoff spot and at least a share of the district title, now prepare to finish the regular season by traveling to Lewisville at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 6.
