For the second year in a row, the Carroll football team had its way with former district rival Colleyville Heritage in the opening round of the playoffs.
This time, the Dragons play was even more dominant, as Carroll routed the Panthers by a 55-7 final on Nov. 14 at Cowboys Stadium.
The Dragons built a 28-0 first-quarter lead, thanks to two interceptions of Colleyville starting quarterback Jimmy Isbell. The Panthers proceeded to change quarterbacks to Jeff Calvert, the team’s usual starter.
The change didn’t allow Colleyville to fare much better. Calvert was intercepted on the third play of the second quarter, and was intercepted once again on the first play of the fourth quarter. Overall, the Dragons recorded five interceptions in the game.
While Carroll’s defense was impressive – holding the Panthers to 339 total yards and just one score, which came midway through the third quarter after the Dragons had already posted 45 points – Carroll’s offense was equally impressive, rolling up 525 total yards and seven touchdowns.
Dragons quarterback David Piland passed for 227 yards and two touchdowns, coming out after Carroll scored on its first drive of the second half.
Running back Tommy Avers rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries, while backups Paul Stevenson and Randy Williams combined for 83 yards and two touchdowns in relief for the Dragons.
Carroll receiver Ryan Gentry caught five passes for 116 yards and a score, while Brett Renger, returning after battling injuries on and off throughout the regular season, caught four passes for 83 yards and a touchdown.
Now, the Dragons prepare for a premier second-round matchup with defending 5A Division I state championship Allen at 8 p.m. Nov. 21 at Cowboys Stadium.
