Arlington Bowie 45, Carroll 21

A week after one of the most thrilling games in Carroll football history, the Dragons saw little go right in a 45-21 loss to Arlington Bowie on Nov. 27.
Trailing 24-14 at halftime, Carroll continued to see things snowball in the second half, as the Volunteers stunned the Dragons (11-3) in the 5A Region I semifinal at SMU’s Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas.
Bowie (10-2) put it away in the fourth quarter, as the Volunteers stretched a 31-21 lead with a 16-yard run by running back Russell Hansbrough with 4:22 left in the game.
Hansbrough torched Carroll’s defense for 119 yards on 12 carries and three touchdowns. The sophomore back scored twice on his first two carries for a total of 50 yards.
A Volunteer interception of Dragons quarterback David Piland’s pass at the Carroll 46-yard line was returned for a score by Donovan Vestal with just over three minutes remaining for the game’s final score and the 24-point win.
It was a rough end for Carroll. Piland, who helped direct an offense that was clicking on all cylinders the week before in the Dragons’ 35-34 double-overtime win over Allen, went 17-of-40 and threw two interceptions against a tough Bowie defense.
Dragons running back Tommy Avers provided one of the few bright spots for Carroll, rushing for 174 yards and two touchdowns.
The teams were nearly even on offensive output, with the Dragons tallying 424 yards and the Volunteers totaling 432. However, mishaps on offense and an inability to slow Bowie spelled doom for Carroll.
It was a sloppy first half for Carroll, as miscues and missed opportunities left the Dragons in a 24-14 hole. Carroll shot itself in the foot with two turnovers, one on the Dragons opening drive.
David Piland threw a bomb from the Bowie 44-yard line that was intercepted in the end zone. That began a Volunteer drive that went 80 yards in six plays and gave Bowie a 7-0 lead with 8:48 remaining in the first.
The Dragons answered on their next possession, as Avers ran in a nine-yard score to tie it at 7-apiece three minutes later. But two missed field goals in the first half by Carroll kicker Cade Foster – one from 41 yards and one from 39 – added to the Dragons’ missed chances.
Piland connected on a 17-yard pass to receiver Peyton Williams to make it 21-14 with 8:32 left in the first half, but that’s as close as it would get from that point. Avers’ one-yard run in the third that cut the deficit to 31-21 was the closest things came in the second half.
