Carroll Track and Field

By John English
The Southlake Journal

As the track and field season gets under way for the Carroll girls team, coach Miranda Wilson said she is feeling pretty good about how things are shaping up.

The Carroll girls finished third in district last season as a team, and Wilson said she has been impressed with what she has seen from her squad early on.

"It's looking really good so far," Wilson said. "We've already competed in two meets, and the girls have improved in each meet, so that's encouraging."

Carroll finished second in the opening meet in their opening meet at Coppell, and the second meet was at Plano East where they were third.

Wilson said her stronger returners this season include Callie Hunter (400 meters), Cat McCormack (300 hurdles), Amy Aton (400m), Kim Parr (pole vault), and West Hardin and Jamie Harris (high jump).

Wilson said there are a couple of objectives for this season.

"Mainly, we want to improve upon what we did last year," Wilson said. "We would definitely like to win the district meet. Even though we are in a tough district, we feel that we have been working hard enough that that is a goal that could be reachable.

"Another goal is to have a regional qualifier in each event. We had 15 qualify for region last year, so we're hoping to get each event represented this year."

On the boys side, coach Tony Holmes said he has liked what his team has shown so far, as well.

"I think we are right on pace to being pretty good," Holmes said.

The Carroll coach said some of his stronger returning athletes this season include Neal Smith (1,600 and 3,200m), Trevor Gilley (1,600 and 3,200m) and Mason Williams (200m).

Smith has committed to Oklahoma State University.

The Carroll boys finished second in district last season, and C.J. Brown won a state championship in the mile run.

Holmes said the goals for this season are pretty straightforward.

"This year, we want to win district and hopefully finish in the top one or two in the region," Holmes said.

The Carroll track and field team will compete in the Coppell Relays on March 6 at Coppell High School.
