When Robert Prigmore defeated Joseph Flores of Canyon Randall 5-3 at last weekend’s state wrestling meet, he accomplished two things.
|
First, he won the state wrestling championship in the 189-pound weight class. Second, he claimed the first-ever championship for Carroll in the sport.
Prigmore finished third at state as a sophomore and second as a junior. The third time was definitely a charm.
“I think I may have gotten a little too excited and came out a little too hard and fired up,” Prigmore said. “I ended up gassing myself a little bit and getting a little tired. But that’s what we train for every day, is matches like that.”
Prigmore led 2-0 after the first period and controlled pretty much throughout.
In the second period, the Carroll wrestler scored two more on a reversal and never looked back.
Prigmore said that even though he is moving on to Lehigh University next fall, where he will continue to wrestle, he will still help out the Carroll program however he can.
“This is not as much my success as it is the team’s success,” Prigmore said. “We just made history, and next year I’m going to be back at the state tournament to cheer on the guys.”
Prigmore said wrestling at Carroll has meant a lot to him and said the program is definitely on the rise.
“This has been everything in my world,” Prigmore said. “Everything. I eat, sleep and drink it. It’s all about getting the program better … and we have come so far, and it can only get better.”
Coach Brock Gray said Prigmore has meant everything to the program at Carroll and said no one is more deserving of a state championship.
“He did a great job,” Gray said. “Robert’s put in a lot of time for this, and I think it’s a well-deserved title for him. He overcame a lot of adversity and did a great job.”
Stephen McPeek also had a strong showing at the meet, finishing fourth overall in the 171-pound weight class.
This was the Carroll sophomore’s second trip to the state competition and second time to place as well.
“We wrestled really tough,” Gray said. “I couldn’t ask for anymore from both of those kids. They fought their hearts out, and I am just real proud that they’re on my team.”
